What's New
Version 5.1.1 (May 29, 2013)
∙Removed an unused traffic alert setting
∙Enabled plate swiping for plates selected from the iPad ∙Runways
tab and from Map popover menus
∙ Fixed a display issue with Military Flight Bag terminal procedures
Version 5.1 (Apr 29, 2013)
The fourth major update of the year brings new features to ForeFlight Mobile:
- Traffic: a new Traffic map layer that displays ADS-B traffic from both the Stratus 1 and Stratus 2 portable ADS-B In receivers.
- Plate swiping: an enhancement to plate viewing enables swiping between procedures using a three finger swipe gesture.
- Track vector: a new setting on Maps view enables display of an own-ship track vector – or “rail” – which shows where your aircraft is heading.
- New HUD instruments for Rate of Turn, Vertical Speed, and Closest Airport in flight plan.
- Combined multi-page instrument procedures.
TRAFFIC
ForeFlight Mobile 5.1 includes a new Traffic layer in the Maps view selector that enables display of traffic targets on the map. Traffic targets only appear if ForeFlight Mobile is connected to either a Stratus 1 or Stratus 2 portable ADS-B weather and traffic receiver. The traffic map layer option is only available when you are connected to a Stratus receiver.
Traffic targets are displayed as diamonds when direction information is not available and as chevrons when direction information is available. Tail number, vertical direction, relative altitude, and the TrafficTrend™ “rail” are displayed when the appropriate bits of information are available. If direction and speed information for the traffic target are available, the rail – a line that varies in length depending upon the target’s speed – is drawn from the target’s last known position to the point the target is expected to cross in 60 seconds.
This release of ForeFlight Mobile includes a firmware update for Stratus 1 owners. That update will enable traffic display for the original Stratus.
It is important to emphasize that if you do not have ADS-B Out installed in the aircraft you fly, ADS-B In receivers (like Stratus) do not provide a robust traffic solution. Aircraft not equipped with ADS-B Out will rarely, if ever, see threatening traffic. You may see traffic far off in the distance, but that is basically of entertainment value only. If you are outside the ADS-B coverage area, the amount of traffic shown will be further diminished. Never use data from ForeFlight Mobile for traffic avoidance, use See & Avoid or direct instructions from ATC to avoid traffic.
PLATE SWIPING
ForeFlight Mobile 5.1 adds a feature to the Plates viewer that enables switching between procedures using a three-finger swipe gesture. This new feature is intelligent enough to know whether you are swiping between plates in a binder you created or whether you are accessing procedures from an airport and want to quickly browse the available arrivals, departures, or approach plates.
OWN-SHIP TRACK VECTOR
When enabled, the new Track Vector feature will draw a line – the “rail” – from your aircraft’s current position to a location ahead of the aircraft. The length of the Track Vector rail is configurable. Activate the Track Vector from the Settings button on the maps view (the button on the top menu bar that looks like a gear).
The Track Vector length is set via the apps main settings view, accessed by tapping More, then Settings, then scrolling to the Maps settings group. You can choose from a range of distance or time based options for the length of the Track Vector rail.
NEW HUD INSTRUMENTS
There are three new instruments in the Heads Up Display at the bottom of the Maps view:
1. Rate of Turn
2.
Vertical Speed
3. Closest airport in flight plan (cardinal position for reporting)
For ForeFlight Pro subscribers, these instruments are also available on geo-referenced approach plates and taxi diagrams.
COMBINED PROCEDURES
We improved the way we display multi-page departures, arrivals, and approaches in the Airports and Plates views. Instead of multiple procedures named “CONT.1″ “CONT.2″, they are now combined into one procedure so you can swipe between pages.
Version 5.0 (Mar 23, 2013)
ForeFlight Mobile 5: Hazard Advisor (Terrain/Obstacles), Extended Runway Centerlines, and more!
Full details at http://blog.foreflight.com
HAZARD ADVISOR
A highlight of ForeFlight 5 is Hazard Advisor, a terrain and obstacle awareness system for iPad. When you activate Hazard Advisor, it highlights hazardous terrain and obstacles within 1,000' of your aircraft's GPS altitude. Terrain and obstacles ("hazards") within 100' are colored red, and hazards within 1,000' of your aircraft's altitude are colored yellow. Obstacles are dynamically added to the screen as they become threats. The terrain colors change smoothly and look stunning.
A new “Terrain” map selection is now available in version 5. This is a new base map that lets you see terrain features. Low resolution and high resolution terrain databases are available for download. The high resolution terrain database enables incredible terrain views, as shown in the screenshot gallery below.
Hazard Advisor and the Terrain Map require iPad 2 or iPhone 4 (or newer). The new Terrain map is available to both Standard and Pro subscribers. Hazard Advisor is available to Pro subscribers only.
Hazard Advisor is powered by a high quality, void-filled terrain database provided by Appareo Systems.
EXTENDED RUNWAY CENTERLINES
Runway situational awareness is greatly improved in ForeFlight 5. New is support for Extended Runway Centerlines, which helps visualize runway layouts when approaching, making it easier to figure out how to plan a pattern entry.
We took this a bit further by adding intelligence that helps you both select the best runway based on winds, and then to select the traffic pattern entry. Pattern entry options include straight in, 45 to the downwind, cross midfield with teardrop, and cross midfield with direct entry for both standard and right hand traffic patterns. The pattern direction defaults - left or right - are indicated. Visualizing runway traffic pattern entry has never been easier.
Also in ForeFlight 5:
✣ Runway composite, crosswind, and headwind components shown on airport runway view and
map popovers when wind information available
✣ Rotate button added to the Plates view that allows rotating of

RUNWAY PROXIMITY ADVISOR
The Runway Proximity Advisor is a helpful visual and audio alerting feature - designed to help reduce runway incursions -that advises you when ForeFlight Mobile predicts your aircraft is approaching, entering, or crossing a runway.
RPA will display a visual alert on any ForeFlight screen and announce the name of the runway you are approaching, entering, or crossing. ForeFlight Mobile is aware of hold-short locations and offsets (e.g. on high speed taxiways) for certain airports, resulting in more precise annunciations at those airports.
A bluetooth aviation headset capable of utilizing the Bluetooth audio streams from iOS - such as the recently released Lightspeed Zulu.2 - is required for audio alerts.
Thank you to the FAA for its sponsored research at MITRE, which helped lay the groundwork for this helpful safety feature!
X-PLANE 10 SUPPORT
ForeFlight and the makers of X-Plane collaborated to enable seamless, wireless integration of ForeFlight Mobile and X-Plane 10. The latest point release of X-Plane 10 - version 10.11 - includes a configuration option that enables X-Plane to transmit position and other data to ForeFlight Mobile. Enable ForeFlight Mobile integration under the Net Connections > Data menu in X-Plane 10.11.

ForeFlight Mobile 4.3: Measure, Manage, Log, and Share
Measure: want to know how far you can venture in your aircraft? Hold down two fingers on the map and an intelligent ruler appears, showing you distance between any two point on the map. If you have a default aircraft configured, the ruler shows time, distance, and TAS. The ruler is great for figuring out distance to the nearest airport or aircraft range.
Share: 4.3 introduces "send to email" and Twitter integration for flight plans. For the social pilots out there, tap the new "Send To" button on the map screen and select either Email or Twitter. With the email option, send your SIC or passengers today's route of flight, a screenshot of the enroute weather, and a copy of the nav log. The email recipient can also click on a link provided in the email and the shared route will appear in their copy of ForeFlight. If you're a Twitter user, send out a message with your route and screenshot.
Log: ForeFlight Mobile now integrates with LogTen Pro. If you have LogTen Pro installed, you can use the new Log button on a flight plan in the File & Brief tab to send flight plan details to LogTen Pro.
Manage: manage your ForeFlight account online now at http://www.foreflight.com/manage. Get password reminders or change passwords, view subscription information and transaction history, view comments you've made, and view devices on which your subscription is installed. If you have a subscription for two or more pilots, you can switch between "single sign on" or "individual accounts", giving each of your pilots their own ForeFlight sub account.

== Maps ==
We've updated the Maps feature to include a new top-map menu and *8* new weather Slip Maps that you can use to visualize area or route weather. Top maps include:
* Flight Rules
* Surface Winds
* Visibility
* Ceiling
* Sky coverage
* Temperature
*
Dew point spread
* Lightning!
Quickly toggle between maps using the new "pop-over" menu.
Worldwide coverage: these new maps, including lightning, provide *worldwide* coverage for our fellow pilots abroad and our globe trotting business, commercial, and military customers. More than 5,000 locations around the world.
Downloadable: the first time you view one of the new weather top maps, all the observation data is downloaded swiftly and available for offline use. When online, observation data is updated every five minutes.
Each top map includes tappable markers revealing detailed observation information, and each marker set is color coded for dangerous conditions, age, or flight rules. Threatening surface winds and low dew point spreads are easily discerned.
== Terminal Procedure Downloads ==
We've dramatically improved download and installation time - 10x in some cases!
== Aircraft Management ==
We've added a new Aircraft view that will let you add, edit, and remove aircraft and input default performance characteristics like true airspeed, fuel burn, altitude, gallons, and fuel units. Reuse your aircraft in flight plans or in the route search feature (include your tail number in a route search and aircraft performance is considered).
== Favorites ==
You can now create favorite routes and favorite static imagery. Tap the star on the route view or when viewing an image to add or remove the item from favorites.
