Version 6.2.1 (Jul 11, 2014)

6.2.1

- Fixes an issue where app would start then close as a result of sync data migration

6.2

Introducing Sync!

Sync is our fast, cloud-based sync system that instantly transfers select information between all your iOS devices. Plan a route on your iPhone and it instantly appears on your iPad. Save a favorite airport on your iPad and that favorite instantly appears on your iPhone.

With this initial release, sync supports recent and favorite airports, weather imagery, routes, and user waypoints. In an upcoming release, we will add sync support for aircraft profiles and filed flight plans, with more sync-enabled features to follow.

Terrain Profile Enhancements

The terrain profile and hazard advisor add configuration options that let you set the corridor width and heights for terrain and obstacle colors. The configurable terrain settings are great for helicopter pilots that only want to be alerted when within 100' of an obstacle, or pilots that want a more conservative view of obstacles to either side of their route centerline.

Other Fixes

- Pack enhancements to weather, terrain, MFB, and network status changes
- Fixed an issue with background downloading of databases
- Other bug fixes and performance enhancements

Introducing Pack™!

Pack simplifies pre-flight preparation by analyzing your route and determining the charts, airport data, terminal procedures, NOTAMs, TFRs, fuel prices, and weather information needed for your flight (and a 50nm buffer on either side of your route). Pack makes you more efficient and more confident that all the charts and data you need for your flight will be available when airborne and disconnected from the Internet.

Access Pack via the suitcase button that now appears in the flight plan editor within the Maps view. When it is time to pack, a red exclamation badge appears on both Pack's suitcase button, as well as the navlog button on the Maps menu bar. Before every flight, remember to Pack and you will know you have the charts, data, and flight information you need!

Version 5.6.1 (Jan 30, 2014)

ForeFlight Mobile 5.6.1 is now available for download at App Store. The highlights of this update include enhanced flight plan filing options - including ICAO flight plan form support - as well as complete worldwide coverage for military pilots and all supplemental DOD/DFLIP/DAFIF data.

ForeFlight Mobile 5.6 requires iOS 6 or later. ForeFlight Mobile 5.6.1 fixes an issue where PBN fields would not get submitted for ICAO flight plans.

Filing Smarter with ForeFlight Mobile and Lockheed Martin AFSS

We are always looking for ways to make you more productive and efficient during every flight, and modernized briefings and flight plan filing is an important goal of ours this year. With this update we continue to build a foundation that streamlines those activities.

ForeFlight now primarily files flight plans directly via the modernized Lockheed Martin Flight Services AFSS interfaces (we also continue to file via DUATS if that is your preference). One of the benefits when using the AFSS interface is that Flight Service specialists will see flight plan details and can therefore more quickly provide you briefings and open VFR flight plans. Another benefit is faster search and rescue response times in the event they are needed.

You don’t need to do anything special to take advantage of the AFSS interfaces. Whether you have entered your DUATS credentials or not, the ForeFlight servers always send a copy of your flight plan to Flight Service whenever you file via ForeFlight Mobile. If you haven’t filed via ForeFlight Mobile before, take it for a spin. When you file with ForeFlight Mobile, you get better Flight Service support, flight alerts, and recorded briefings that prove you comply with Part 91.103.

File ICAO for US domestic flights

When flying internationally or crossing foreign airspace (common in the great lakes regions), you must file ICAO flight plans to be compliant with the regulations. However, there are reasons you may be required to file using the ICAO format for US Domestic flights, like Performance Based Navigation, RVSM, or ADS-B.

If you normally file using the FAA/Domestic format, we encourage you to consider the benefits of filing ICAO. The ICAO format collects additional bits of information about your flight and aircraft profile that increase safety and may help with potential search and rescue efforts. If you are flying over remote areas, you can indicate what survival gear or emergency radios you have onboard. Flying over the Great Lakes? You can report details about dinghy equipment.

File ICAO for IFR flights to Canada, Caribbean, Mexico, and everywhere in between!

As we expand our geographic coverage, so does our flight plan filing support. Our support for filing ICAO flight plans lets you file IFR flights to and from the US from any country and IFR flights within foreign countries or regions, such as Canada, Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexico.

Expanded Coverage for US Military Customers

ForeFlight Mobile 5.6 introduces the completed worldwide coverage of Department of Defense DFLIP data including: approach plates, enroute charts, and DAFIF nav data. In addition to Central and South America, Pacific, Australasia, and Antarctica, ForeFlight’s Military Flight Bag now offers: Africa, Canada, Europe, Asia, Middle East, and United States.

Military Flight Bag is a service available to military, state and federal agencies, and DOD contractors who have approval to access the Department of Defense Flight Information Publications (FLIP) and who have an active ForeFlight Mobile subscription.

Enable Ownship Setting

One final note for our customers with limited approval for use of the Ownship feature, we have modified the “Disable Ownship” setting to “Enable Ownship” and added an option for Ownship location to automatically be shown on the airport diagram when traveling at 40 knots or slower.

5.2

The fifth major release of the year brings:

- An enhanced documents system with search, smarter bookmarking, and improved table of contents navigation.

- Complete VFR / Visual Navigation Charts and Visual Terminal Area charts for Canada, developed in partnership with NAV CANADA!

- FAA Helicopter charts and Gulf VFR/IFR Helicopter Charts (for the Offshore Oil & Gas industry).

- Distance rings.

Minor enhancements include:

- A new setting for the navlog (found in More > Settings) to select fewer columns and thus a larger font.
- Direct connection to the BadElf GPS to avoid iOS 6 GPS bugs.
- Improvements to the ownship track vector.
- Bug fix for "best winds" in pattern advisor when connected to Stratus.
- Bug fix for display of chart tiles above 75 deg latitude.
- Bug fix for winds aloft in routes for high latitudes.

HEY, CANADA!

In partnership with NAV CANADA, we are excited to announced the availability of digital Visual Navigation Charts (VNC) and Visual Terminal Area (VTA) charts in ForeFlight Mobile. The new Canada VNC map layer shows the entire mosaic of VNCs, with VTAs automatically appearing as you zoom into bigger metropolitan areas. These charts can be downloaded to your iPad or iPhone for offline use. The VNC and VTA charts are geo-referenced and optimized for display on the iPad and have a unique new feature: the ability to dynamically hide or show chart legends and change the stacking of charts to maximize clarity of chart features.

FAA HELICOPTER AND GULF CHARTS

ForeFlight Mobile 5.2 also brings additional chart coverage to U.S. pilots: FAA Helicopter, Gulf of Mexico VFR, and Gulf of Mexico IFR charts. Enable these map layers by going to More -> Downloads, tap on "United States" in the top Download Settings, then set Helicopter Charts to ON. Go back to Maps and you'll see the new layers in the map selector.

DISTANCE RINGS

Enabled in Settings, the new Distance Rings feature displays 3 concentric rings around your aircraft’s current location, allowing you to quickly get a sense of distance to features around you. Based on either time or distance values, the rings give quick estimates for time enroute or nautical miles to a nearby storm cell, traffic target, shoreline, or anything else shown on the Map.

Green arrows on the rings animate smoothly to show your current track along the ground, providing yet another indication of where you'll be in the future, and when. There's even an automatic scale setting that keeps the rings in view as you zoom in and out on the Maps. From 2nm to 2000, the rings will provide a continuous reference from your aircraft.

DOCUMENT SEARCH AND NAMED BOOKMARKS

We completely revamped the Document Engine on the iPad to make it faster and more feature-filled. Tap on the new magnifying glass to display the search window then start typing. The search is extremely speedy, even in multi-hundred page documents like NOTAMs.

REDESIGNED FBO VIEW

We also redesigned the FBO view to present more detailed information about facilities and amenities at your local airport.

Version 5.1 (Apr 29, 2013)

The fourth major update of the year brings new features to ForeFlight Mobile:

- Traffic: a new Traffic map layer that displays ADS-B traffic from both the Stratus 1 and Stratus 2 portable ADS-B In receivers.

- Plate swiping: an enhancement to plate viewing enables swiping between procedures using a three finger swipe gesture.

- Track vector: a new setting on Maps view enables display of an own-ship track vector – or “rail” – which shows where your aircraft is heading.

- New HUD instruments for Rate of Turn, Vertical Speed, and Closest Airport in flight plan.

- Combined multi-page instrument procedures.

TRAFFIC

ForeFlight Mobile 5.1 includes a new Traffic layer in the Maps view selector that enables display of traffic targets on the map. Traffic targets only appear if ForeFlight Mobile is connected to either a Stratus 1 or Stratus 2 portable ADS-B weather and traffic receiver. The traffic map layer option is only available when you are connected to a Stratus receiver.

Traffic targets are displayed as diamonds when direction information is not available and as chevrons when direction information is available. Tail number, vertical direction, relative altitude, and the TrafficTrend™ “rail” are displayed when the appropriate bits of information are available. If direction and speed information for the traffic target are available, the rail – a line that varies in length depending upon the target’s speed – is drawn from the target’s last known position to the point the target is expected to cross in 60 seconds.

This release of ForeFlight Mobile includes a firmware update for Stratus 1 owners. That update will enable traffic display for the original Stratus.

It is important to emphasize that if you do not have ADS-B Out installed in the aircraft you fly, ADS-B In receivers (like Stratus) do not provide a robust traffic solution. Aircraft not equipped with ADS-B Out will rarely, if ever, see threatening traffic. You may see traffic far off in the distance, but that is basically of entertainment value only. If you are outside the ADS-B coverage area, the amount of traffic shown will be further diminished. Never use data from ForeFlight Mobile for traffic avoidance, use See & Avoid or direct instructions from ATC to avoid traffic.

PLATE SWIPING

ForeFlight Mobile 5.1 adds a feature to the Plates viewer that enables switching between procedures using a three-finger swipe gesture. This new feature is intelligent enough to know whether you are swiping between plates in a binder you created or whether you are accessing procedures from an airport and want to quickly browse the available arrivals, departures, or approach plates.

OWN-SHIP TRACK VECTOR

When enabled, the new Track Vector feature will draw a line – the “rail” – from your aircraft’s current position to a location ahead of the aircraft. The length of the Track Vector rail is configurable. Activate the Track Vector from the Settings button on the maps view (the button on the top menu bar that looks like a gear).

The Track Vector length is set via the apps main settings view, accessed by tapping More, then Settings, then scrolling to the Maps settings group. You can choose from a range of distance or time based options for the length of the Track Vector rail.

NEW HUD INSTRUMENTS

There are three new instruments in the Heads Up Display at the bottom of the Maps view:
1. Rate of Turn
2. Vertical Speed
3. Closest airport in flight plan (cardinal position for reporting)

For ForeFlight Pro subscribers, these instruments are also available on geo-referenced approach plates and taxi diagrams.

COMBINED PROCEDURES

We improved the way we display multi-page departures, arrivals, and approaches in the Airports and Plates views. Instead of multiple procedures named “CONT.1″ “CONT.2″, they are now combined into one procedure so you can swipe between pages.

ForeFlight Mobile 5: Hazard Advisor (Terrain/Obstacles), Extended Runway Centerlines, and more!

Full details at http://blog.foreflight.com

HAZARD ADVISOR

A highlight of ForeFlight 5 is Hazard Advisor, a terrain and obstacle awareness system for iPad. When you activate Hazard Advisor, it highlights hazardous terrain and obstacles within 1,000' of your aircraft's GPS altitude. Terrain and obstacles ("hazards") within 100' are colored red, and hazards within 1,000' of your aircraft's altitude are colored yellow. Obstacles are dynamically added to the screen as they become threats. The terrain colors change smoothly and look stunning.

A new “Terrain” map selection is now available in version 5. This is a new base map that lets you see terrain features. Low resolution and high resolution terrain databases are available for download. The high resolution terrain database enables incredible terrain views, as shown in the screenshot gallery below.

Hazard Advisor and the Terrain Map require iPad 2 or iPhone 4 (or newer). The new Terrain map is available to both Standard and Pro subscribers. Hazard Advisor is available to Pro subscribers only.

Hazard Advisor is powered by a high quality, void-filled terrain database provided by Appareo Systems.

EXTENDED RUNWAY CENTERLINES

Runway situational awareness is greatly improved in ForeFlight 5. New is support for Extended Runway Centerlines, which helps visualize runway layouts when approaching, making it easier to figure out how to plan a pattern entry.

We took this a bit further by adding intelligence that helps you both select the best runway based on winds, and then to select the traffic pattern entry. Pattern entry options include straight in, 45 to the downwind, cross midfield with teardrop, and cross midfield with direct entry for both standard and right hand traffic patterns. The pattern direction defaults - left or right - are indicated. Visualizing runway traffic pattern entry has never been easier.

Also in ForeFlight 5:
✣ Runway composite, crosswind, and headwind components shown on airport runway view and map popovers when wind information available
✣ Rotate button added to the Plates view that allows rotating of landscape oriented terminal procedures.
✣ Auto-Taxi system enables automatic display of taxi diagrams after rollout with ownship position (Pro feature)
✣ VFR Pattern Entry option added to Procedure Advisor, allowing selection of four different entry options (straight in, cross-direct, cross-teardrop, and 45 to the downwind)
✣ Preferred runways and preferred entry patterns are indicated in Procedure Advisor's Pattern Entry list.

Other Fixes
✣ Popovers on the map expand taller on iPad
✣ Fix to allow waypoint deletion via touch planning on a route with only two waypoints

New features in ForeFlight Mobile 4.7 include:
✣ Runway Proximity Advisor
✣ X-Plane Simulation Support (via X-Plane 10.11)
✣ Scratchpad improvements
✣ Bug fixes

RUNWAY PROXIMITY ADVISOR

The Runway Proximity Advisor is a helpful visual and audio alerting feature - designed to help reduce runway incursions -that advises you when ForeFlight Mobile predicts your aircraft is approaching, entering, or crossing a runway.

RPA will display a visual alert on any ForeFlight screen and announce the name of the runway you are approaching, entering, or crossing. ForeFlight Mobile is aware of hold-short locations and offsets (e.g. on high speed taxiways) for certain airports, resulting in more precise annunciations at those airports.

A bluetooth aviation headset capable of utilizing the Bluetooth audio streams from iOS - such as the recently released Lightspeed Zulu.2 - is required for audio alerts.

Thank you to the FAA for its sponsored research at MITRE, which helped lay the groundwork for this helpful safety feature!

X-PLANE 10 SUPPORT

ForeFlight and the makers of X-Plane collaborated to enable seamless, wireless integration of ForeFlight Mobile and X-Plane 10. The latest point release of X-Plane 10 - version 10.11 - includes a configuration option that enables X-Plane to transmit position and other data to ForeFlight Mobile. Enable ForeFlight Mobile integration under the Net Connections > Data menu in X-Plane 10.11.

SCRATCHPAD

With this release, scratchpad gets some love. The Scratchpad now includes a settings option that lets you select stroke width. Re-drawing on initialization is also fixed, meaning no more waiting for your scratchpad to redraw the last notes you jotted.

ForeFlight Mobile 4.3: Measure, Manage, Log, and Share

Measure: want to know how far you can venture in your aircraft? Hold down two fingers on the map and an intelligent ruler appears, showing you distance between any two point on the map. If you have a default aircraft configured, the ruler shows time, distance, and TAS. The ruler is great for figuring out distance to the nearest airport or aircraft range.

Share: 4.3 introduces "send to email" and Twitter integration for flight plans. For the social pilots out there, tap the new "Send To" button on the map screen and select either Email or Twitter. With the email option, send your SIC or passengers today's route of flight, a screenshot of the enroute weather, and a copy of the nav log. The email recipient can also click on a link provided in the email and the shared route will appear in their copy of ForeFlight. If you're a Twitter user, send out a message with your route and screenshot.

Log: ForeFlight Mobile now integrates with LogTen Pro. If you have LogTen Pro installed, you can use the new Log button on a flight plan in the File & Brief tab to send flight plan details to LogTen Pro.

Manage: manage your ForeFlight account online now at http://www.foreflight.com/manage. Get password reminders or change passwords, view subscription information and transaction history, view comments you've made, and view devices on which your subscription is installed. If you have a subscription for two or more pilots, you can switch between "single sign on" or "individual accounts", giving each of your pilots their own ForeFlight sub account.

4.2 is a big release including:

* In flight SiriusXM weather via Baron Mobile Link
* An all new data-driven map engine with global basemap coverage
* ForeFlight Global Winds
* Map layering (e.g. radar on sectionals)
* Super-zoom enroute maps
* Interactive TFRs, Airmets, Sigmets, and PIREPs

IN FLIGHT, DATA LINK WEATHER

Data link weather has landed on ForeFlight. The first device supported is the Baron Mobile Link, providing complete in-flight weather coverage of the US, Canada, Puerto Rico/Caribbean, and Hawaii. Data link weather is elegantly integrated with all ForeFlight maps and airport pages. The radar and satellite images are color-matched, creating a consistent experience when transitioning between Internet and data-link based weather.

MAPS

4.2 introduces a brand new, data-driven, vector-drawn global mapping engine that displays cities, towns, roads, borders, populated areas, lakes, rivers, coastlines, and more. The entire world is packed into a small 19MB download.

Also new:
* Interactive TFR map showing active and pending TFRs. Tap a TFR for more details. TFRs active within 24 hours shown in red; others shown in yellow.
* Interactive AIR/SIGMET map showing active and forecast flight hazards. Tap an AIR/SIGMET for more details. Covers IFR, winds, turbulence, convective, ash, and other hazards.
* Interactive, global PIREPs map. Tap a PREP marker for details. Includes PIREPs transmitted by commercial aircraft ACARS.
* Super-zoom capability on enroute maps providing an extra level of detail and zoom for customers that requested this.

FOREFLIGHT GLOBAL WINDS

4.2 provides access to the ForeFlight Global Winds engine (the "GWE"), which provides winds aloft forecasts for any point on the planet and up to FL540. The GWE will provide wind effects for any flight plan entered, including custom user waypoints and arbitrary lat/lons.

== Maps ==

We've updated the Maps feature to include a new top-map menu and *8* new weather Slip Maps that you can use to visualize area or route weather. Top maps include:

* Flight Rules
* Surface Winds
* Visibility
* Ceiling
* Sky coverage
* Temperature
* Dew point spread
* Lightning!

Quickly toggle between maps using the new "pop-over" menu.

Worldwide coverage: these new maps, including lightning, provide *worldwide* coverage for our fellow pilots abroad and our globe trotting business, commercial, and military customers. More than 5,000 locations around the world.

Downloadable: the first time you view one of the new weather top maps, all the observation data is downloaded swiftly and available for offline use. When online, observation data is updated every five minutes.

Each top map includes tappable markers revealing detailed observation information, and each marker set is color coded for dangerous conditions, age, or flight rules. Threatening surface winds and low dew point spreads are easily discerned.

== Terminal Procedure Downloads ==

We've dramatically improved download and installation time - 10x in some cases!

== Aircraft Management ==

We've added a new Aircraft view that will let you add, edit, and remove aircraft and input default performance characteristics like true airspeed, fuel burn, altitude, gallons, and fuel units. Reuse your aircraft in flight plans or in the route search feature (include your tail number in a route search and aircraft performance is considered).

== Favorites ==

You can now create favorite routes and favorite static imagery. Tap the star on the route view or when viewing an image to add or remove the item from favorites.

== Help ==

We've added a new Help view that will let you watch ForeFlight How To videos on-demand.
