It makes running fun
I am not a “runner” however this app is helping me get there. My only workouts are classes at the gym. Thanks to COVID, I can’t make it to the gym. After dragging my feet for a few months, I decided it was time to put my sneakers on and hit the pavement. With the help of Vi, I am able to track my progress and celebrate my growth.
I am three workouts in and Vi’s coaching is helping me deliberately run. After reading Grit and Peak, I realize my run had plateaued because I no goals. But Vi brings me back to running when my mind wonders. I am more focused so my miles count more.
I backed this on Kickstarter and wasn’t too impressed when it was first released. Decided to give it another go during quarantine since I can’t meet up with my run group.First off m headphones had a firmware update which is good to see that they’ve worked on improving them.I have the “chattiness” level to “short n sweet” and I still feel that she talks too much. Give me the options to control the stats I hear. I don’t care to hear how many calories I’ve burned while I’m still running. Nor do I need both hear both my pace and speed. All I want to hear are my intervals ques and if I need to up my pace or my cadence. Also I have Siri control turned off. So every time I push my right ear bud in more I hear “sorry I don’t have voice control right now.” I know that, I turned it off.And also, still no marathon or half marathon training options? 10k is still the furthest? Is this only meant for beginners?I will have to admit that my 5k pace has dropped since using the app. So that is a plus but I feel with how long this app has been out, there have not been that many additions. Just options taken away. “Step to the beat” seems to be gone.
*Long detailed review ahead*I’ve downloaded many a running app over the years and Vi is hands down my favorite. She talks throughout the run, let’s you know if you are going too fast or too slow, tells you your steps per minute, doesn’t give you a bs “almost there” a quarter mile out (more like 5-10 steps), she will sound like she is running next to you when she speaks through slightly labored breathing, and her voice frequently giving you information to process keeps your mind off of your legs. AND all of that is customizable. Don’t like chatty Kathys? Turn her off or turn down her talking frequency. The music within the app is great and pretty well known and is mixed to match what your step pace should be. Vi talks during your music, but you can still hear it in the background so you don’t lose your groove. They put a lot of thought into this app. Vi seems a bit expensive for an app, HOWEVER, I was paying for a gym membership solely to use the treadmills (Texas is so hot!) but once I found Vi I sucked it up, cancelled my membership, and now I’m saving $12/month, getting a better workout, and getting my daily dose of vitamin sun. So why 4 stars? Sometimes Vi craps out in the middle of workouts. You can hear that she wants to say something because the music volume gets lower, but her voice is nowhere to be found. For some, that may be nothing more than a slight annoyance. For me, it’s a workout killer. I need someone to enthusiastically cheer me on and tell me when to go faster or slower, how long I’ve been going, how much longer I have, and so on. I know technology isn’t perfect, but to me it’s the equivalent of paying for a gym membership only to find that the gym is consistently inconsistent with the working order of its equipment.
