This game seems to be designed by people who don’t know how to play backgammon. The moves it chooses are terrible, it’s like playing a person who has played the game twice before and doesn’t understand the concept. If you are looking for a challenging game, keep looking. If you are wanting to play the computer equivalent of a kindergarten student doing their best, buy it.
The pay version is just as tiny as the free version. Absurd. No full screen options. What a waste!
For beginners, but it cheats.
I've been playing for 35 years and played a LOT in college so take this with a grain of salt. It is a good app and I haven't found it to violate rules. I can't seem to take back after moving my first piece (take backs are legal until you pick up your dice) before moving my second (this should be doable). It's a good app if your just learning to play and develop your strategy. However, even on the "hard" setting, I find the computer opponent to be a joke. I see constant mistakes; it wants to burn me when it's not smart to do so, and makes very inefficient use of it's die. If you want to feel smart get it, but don't try to learn it's flawed strategy. I rarely finish a game without the computer still having pieces in my home territory (or on the bar). If chess can be made difficult they should be able to do far better than this for backgammon. Good random die roll generator, and cheap, not full-screen but big enough on my 13" MBP. Unless you're expecting the pieces to blow each other up, the graphics are fine.UPDATE: I still find myself playing this game (maybe I like to win too much against a cheater), but I find that the computer does cheat quite often, and rarely in my favor. The easier levels are more conservative and generally a little harder, but the computer has seriously flawed strategy - very seriously flawed. Winning 200+ times in a row seems matematically impossible especially when %75 of the time the computer still has pieces on my side of the board at the end. Great practice for beginners, but will never make you a really good player. It seems to be cheating worse as time goes on, but still not challenging. It is now setting me up withough moving it's piece, leaving that open (and sometimes not) piece just out of rech for me to return the favor as my peice re-enters the board. It's hard to tell if it's learning (I doubt that capacity would be in such an inexpensive game, I'm no programmer), but I have seen it make intelligent moves that it initially didn't. Still, great for those just learning the game.
I do not like the white screen that pops up to tell you there is no move and does not enable you to see the dice. I can tell by looking at the dice and do not need that screen to pop up so you can't see them; take this out of the game as it's only function is to conceal the dice and annoy the crap out of you! This thing cheats! the AI is vindictive and will make moves just to annoy, not to win the game strategically. The dice rolls are completely under the control of the computer; if you win it is because the computer let you win. It always throws exactly what it needs to put you on the bar or avoid leaving blots; for you, not so much. Sure wish there was some way to take control of the dice away from the AI! Also, when bearing off, it will not bear off but the darn screen will pop up and tell you it has no move, when actually it does but moving that stone will leave a blot and it won't do that. In a recent example, I could barely see the die, it was a five and AI had two stones on the five point; bearing off one of them would leave a blot. There were no stones on the six point. I'm not relaxed or entertained when I feel cheated.Lenzladee
Lousy graphics, no undo, way too small- looks like you're holding your iPhone up to the screen. Don't bother, even though free. Immediately uninstalled.
