Not Customizable Yet
I was hoping that this would replace the existing dock with new docks which would work better. It sets up tabs for its docks, some on the top of the screen where I don’t want them, and others on the left side of the screen where I do want them but can’t see them unless I use the existing dock out of the way. I can’t move the tabs to where I do want them and can use them. I had already contacted the developer about accessibility questions, and he was helpful, so I hope future versions will be better. I am clumsy. I was able to set it so I have to click to open each tab, and don’t have to worry about accidentally slipping and opening the tabs, but I do slip and keep accidentally closing the tabs. I would prefer to able able to set up one always-open dock on the left and another on the right, than deal with these tabs which keep closing.
Great utility. The basic concept is certainly not new, but this is by far the best implementation I've tried. There are many ways to customize your docks so that they work exactly as you want. No issues with stability—both the interface design and the coding seem solid (using version 1.3). It can take a bit of tweaking to make everything to your liking (the effects of some of the options were not totally clear at first) but the time is well worth it.
New Version 1.3 works great!
I have been looking for a replacement for “A-Dock X” since it stopped working in OS X 10.9, and DockShelf is a worthy replacement and adds a few new new twists and features. DockShelf v1.3 is a great update, and seems to fix all of the minor issues I had noted in previous versions. You can create docs for apps, docks to hold frequently accessed files/folders, and "process docks” that collect together all currently running apps, as well as “Workspaces” to reflect different sets of docks to be used in different circumstances, e.g., a set of docks to be used while doing video editing or programming. Version 1.3 also adds Retina support, a more pleasing color palette with better transparency options, and fixes an issue in previous versions where DockShelf would occasionally have to be restarted. A great app and a nice update from this developer!
Just Short of 5 Stars
I just purchased DockShelf after testing agains Dock-It. I have been looking at ways to clean up my dock and access Files and Apps easier using Stacks and this is just about perfect, with a few short comings:-Seems a bit slugish compared to the system Dock. Would be nice if the Magnification behaved like the System version. I'm a bit OCD and it bugs me a little when part of the hovered icon gets cut off by the edge of the screen.-While I plan on using the Tabs with some of my Applications, the edge view is kinda bothersome. It would be nice if there was a preference option to have the Dock be specified to a certain side of the screen so that, for say my home workspace, I don't have to hover over the little tab to get the Dock to show, but instead can move my mouse to any part of one side of the screen to open the Dock.-Fullscreen support in workspace preferences. Sometimes I do access my Spaces while in a fullscreen App. Plus, if I was runing an App workspace in fullscreen, it would be great to be able to access those specific tabs on the screen.-Another behaviorial issue is when selecting icons. For example, in the system dock, if I click a space, that space opens, and if I want to open another space I only have to click that other space, but with DockShelf, once a space is open, I have to click off that space first to close it before I can open another space. Would be nice if I could just click the other space a la the system Dock.-Speaking of Spaces. Being able to designate a custom icon to that space would also be awesome.Other than that, I do enjoy the App. Especially with the App specific Dock features. Using Adobe and other like products, I need to access some other files but don't need the tabs when its not in use. I'm going to keep using the app and will update the review as necessary. Good Job Guys.
great app, i love it, but!
i love this app, makes all my apps and folders easy to find, only 2 problems, and one of them has nothing to do with the app itself…. ok 1st one, it doesn't stay open, i guess you all call it crashing, but this only happens when i wake my computer from sleeping.. 2. i wish i could get rid of the apple dock so this program can replace it… but other then that, i love this app its like having a notebook binder with sections, i do recommend this if you have a lot of apps and folders you go to all the time and don't want you desk top to be cluttered, cause mine is nice and neat right now…. about the only thing i have organized in my life LOL… :)
