When iDentify broke on lookups, yet again, I thought to look for an alternative. Wish I had a demo of this before I paid for it. While it has some positive aspects, such as finding alternate versions of series (UK vs US or different years, etc) - that is just about the only positive thing I found. The “intuitive” (according to the documentation) interface is anything but intuitive. I HAD to go to the documentation to figure out how to get things working. For all the flexibility in searches, I had to create an automator flow to rewrite all my filenames to remove periods and extraneous data just to get this even half working. It can’t handle dots in the filenames and insists on anything after the sXXeXX to be the title. It will not fill in the title under any method I have been able to determine. Once I added the cover and description data I had to manually go into the Data tab listing to find the episode titles and manually copy/paste them into the Title field. This app has potential, IF some serious work was done to the filename parsing and if it could learn to put the episode title in. But those are such fundamentally basic features that I cannot bring myself to rate it higher at this point. I really wish refunds were supported here in the US. I could learn to live with the kludgy interface as is, but it honestly needs a ground up redesign to make it more intuitive.
Easy to use
I was looking for something a better than MetaZ and this fits the bill. Adds the HD tag so there is no need for me to use Subler for that task. Handles shows that it can find with aplomb, but is a bit difficult if the show is not found in thetvdb.com database. Would be nice if you could save templates for that situation instead of recreating the show from scratch each time a new episode is added.
Good, but requires more work
Once you figure out how to use it, the software does a great job of finding and writing metadata. Unfortunately, it suffers slightly from a difficult process relative to MetaMovie. If you have (and want) your episodes in the order defined by thetvdb.com, you will have an easier task ahead of you. If you are dealing with any other order or incomplete seasons, things gets harder. Granted, dealing with batches can be a difficult process to automate, but this software could earn higher marks if it tackled the user experience in more depth. I’d pay more for that simplicity.
Better than iDentify
For TV shows, get this. iDentify can’t handle them, won’t use IMDB tags, can’t differentiate between older and newer series by the same name etc. This app does. I felt it wasn’t as intuitive to use, but once I figured it out everything just worked. Tagging was quick, accurate, and easy. You get your choice of cover art, and it gets all the important data including actors, directors etc.Money well spent if you are cleaning up and cataloging your TV series.
