App Description

The Fanorona, also known as malagasy checkers, is a traditional game of Madagascar descended from Alquercque.
Its unique and original capture system guarantees full game parts of strategies and tactics.
Dating from the sixteenth century, he had a major importance in the life of the Grand Island as evidenced by the numerous allusions to the game in the oral traditions. Considered as a school of life, teaching Fanorona took an important place in the education of young princes and aristocrats Malagasy. The influence of this game was not limited to education but was also present even in the political and military life. Thus, in 1895, during the invasion of Madagascar by the French army, the queen RanavalonaI III decided not to follow the advice of his military strategist following his defeat of a Fanorona game part. This decision led to the capture of the island which remained a French colony until 1960. Today, the Fanorona remains immensely popular with all the Malagasy, and it is common seeing game parts played in the streets or in front of shops.
Should you succumb, you too, to the charms of Fanorona?
