I was hoping to find an alternative to the over-priced ChemDraw and ChemDoodle programs, and this program is overly complicated and difficult to work. Good luck trying to make a benzene ring or moving a double bond… It won’t even let me make multiple molecules, or add a double bond. If you don’t know (or don’t want to figure out) the hybridization of your molecules, you pretty much can’t do anything.Very disappointed.
Great for Chemistry Majors
I bought this with some hesitation because of some of the reviews. I was annoyed at first, because it was not as straight forward as the molecule drawing programs I used for online homework in my lower level Chemistry courses. It takes a few tries to figure out how to work your way around it, but it's not impossible. Improvements can be made, and I would suggest that the creators look into tweaking the program to make it more user friendly for those not as Chemistry inclined. With that said, you will be more than capable of figuring out this app if you have an understanding of Chemistry. I would not use it if you are taking general courses. It would be too complex for the simple student, but if you are a grad or undergrad focusing in Chemistry, I would strongly recommend it.
Good app for the price.
This app is very good for drawing simple structures such as amino acids and nucletides. The interfaces is very user friendly and simple to use. There are more complex options in the Expert Mode which allows you to click individual atoms or bonds and change them to whatever you need. The app allows you to change atoms within a ring, but it doesn't allow you to break the ring by deleting an atom, but you can just undo the ring and make your own so that's not that bad.Sometimes the app can get tricky when you don't have the right coordinate number selected cause this will cause extra Hydrogens to be put on the atom, but you can just undo the last atom and change the coordinate number to get the right number of hydrogens.Overall, I've really enjoyed the app and I would recommend it to anybody wanting a less expensive alternative to the other big money alternative.
Wish I could return this.
I did read the previous review and wish I listened. This software is not very interactive and rather frustrating to use. Don't be swayed by the pretty pictures in the app store.
Absolute Piece of Crap.
I was looking for an alternative to the high-priced programs offered from Cambridge Soft (Bio Ultra Draw) and ChemDoodle so I clicked the download button and took my chances -- it's only $5 and Judy Long claimed in the description that the negative reviews were based on expectations that were not expressly documented in the description. So I rolled the dice. I have spent the past 4 hours constantly trying to make this program work. If you need to draw a simple molecule - then great…but if you need to draw any ring structure - good luck. Once you start creating multiple molecules (for example, trying to flip a pyridine and move it towards a ribose sugar), they begin to overlap and you are unable to select individual molecules and the program locks up - thus, requiring a "force quit". Of course none of the changes I made were carried through and I was forced to start with a prior save. If any of your molecule's boundaries even touch, then you run the risk of not being able to select them and the program doesn't know what to do so it gets stuck in an endless dialog prompt, from which you cannot get out unless you force quit. The adage of "you get what you pay for" is clearly illustrated here.Buyer Beware.
