Mobile Minute: Global House & Home Mobile App Usage Spikes 20% in Summer Months

Lexi Sydow

During the peak summer rental months more people turn to mobile for house hunting and home decorating — driving more engagement in popular apps including Trulia - Apts & Homes for Rent, idealista and Houzz.

What’s Happening:

Trends indicate summer months tend to be the most popular for moving and signing new leases as college students go back to school and graduates enter the workforce, and notably in markets like the US, people are renting more often than buying homes. As people spend increasingly more time on their mobile devices, they’re turning to mobile apps for their large life decisions — to not only facilitate the search for their new homes and apartments, but also to find inspiration on how to decorate it — creating a significant increase in time spent among popular House & Home apps.

Why It Matters:

Globally, time spent in House & Home apps on Android phones grew over 20% during the first two summer months (May & June 2019) compared to the two months prior. Real estate apps dominated the top House & Home Apps by time spent globally. In fact, house and property finding app idealista was the #1 House & Home app by global growth in time spent from March - April 2019 to May - June 2019. Houzz, an app to help you decorate or remodel your home, was #2. In the US, Trulia - Apts & Homes for Rent saw strong growth in time spent over the same time period — an indication of the growth in demand for the rental market.

Go Deeper:

The rise in popularity of renting and mobile phone usage have demonstrated a meaningful link driven by the usage of convenient, intuitive, free home rental apps. The market turning to mobile indicates a powerful shift in consumer mindset: even for large, watershed life moments like buying or renting a home, we are turning to our mobile phones. Mobile devices are easier to use and more powerful than ever before — enabling richer, deeper experiences that not only rival desktop but cater to the on-the-go and second-screening nature of today’s consumers.
