Mobile Minute: Mobile Sports Betting Gains Momentum Ahead of Super Bowl LIV

Mobile betting apps drive engagement for the US’s biggest sporting event

What’s Happening: 

Since 1967, the annual Super Bowl has been widely known for its friendly wagers and office pools. In 2019, New Jersey alone wagered over $4 billion in sports betting and more than 90% of these bets were placed on mobile. Additional states are beginning to discuss legalization — rolling out apps in states such as New Hampshire, Indiana, and soon to be Washington D.C. While not yet entirely finalized, these developments are timely in the lead up to Super Bowl LIV on February 2, 2020. During the first 4 weeks of the new year (Dec 29, 2019 - Jan 25, 2020) we have seen over 200,000 iOS downloads of the top 5 sports betting apps in the US. 

FanDuel Sportsbook was the #1 sports betting app on iOS in the US during the week of Jan 19, 2020 leading up to the Super Bowl. As of Jan 23, 2020, the app hit #3 for daily iPhone downloads among Sports apps in the US, its highest daily rank in the last 365 days. During the 2019 Super Bowl on Feb 3, 2019, FanDuel Sportsbook hit #6 by iPhone downloads among Sports apps, up 44 places from the Sunday prior. We expect to see FanDuel Sportsbook set new records during this year’s Super Bowl.  

Why It Matters: 

Nearly 100 million people watched the 2019 Super Bowl. With the legalization of online betting, betting and streaming on mobile both stand to see an increase in participation. Take the convenience of watching the big game from the comfort of your home, and couple it with the convenience of placing a bet on anything from the final score to the color of the team’s Gatorade, and you have the ultimate Super Bowl pairing. The growth of users in betting apps can escalate the viewership of sports events, and increase the time spent in the overall Sports app category.

Through apps such as DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook and William Hill NJ Sports Betting, the legalization of betting can accelerate the industry nationwide. Each year, the Super Bowl tops the charts as the most-watched sporting event in America. Our latest State of Mobile 2020 report showed that, more than ever before, sports fans are turning to mobile to stream their favorite matches. Globally, megabytes consumed grew 75% in 2019 from 2 years prior and time spent in Sports apps grew 35% over the same time period.  As we prepare for the 2020 showdown between the Chiefs and the 49ers, betting apps are predicted to spike in the metrics that matter: time spent, downloads, and active users. As additional states jump on the bandwagon of mobile betting, we predict that these numbers will grow even more- solidifying a mobile vertical we’ve never seen before.
