Mobile Minute: Top Apps for Navigating the Holiday Travel Season

Lexi Sydow

Whether traveling home for the holidays or booking a last minute trip — mobile can relieve the stresses of the busiest travel season.

What’s Happening:

As people across the globe prepare to travel home for the holidays, this season will be one of the busiest yet. AAA estimates a record 115.6 million Americans will travel this holiday season between Dec. 21, 2019 and Jan. 1, 2020. While traveling comes with many stresses including crowded airports, traffic-filled roads and more, mobile apps make the perfect travel companion for everything from booking, boarding, entertainment and navigation.

Why It Matters:

If you’re traveling by air this holiday, be sure to download your airline’s app to help streamline both airport and in-flight efficiencies including booking, deplaning and in-flight entertainment. American Airlines also recently announced the company will begin accepting mobile passport scanning for international travel. Both American Airlines (#7) and Southwest Airlines (#6) currently rank in the top 10 Travel apps by daily iPhone downloads as of Dec 14, 2019.

Knowing where you are going is key to efficient travel. Whether you’re driving to the airport or taking a cross-country road trip, apps like Google Maps and Waze can help you navigate busy roads and find the most efficient route to get you to your destination on time — helping to avoid congestion and roadblocks.

However, if you prefer to leave the driving to someone else — ride-sharing apps such as Uber and Lyft can also get you to your destination. These apps are also useful ways to travel home from holiday parties and oftentimes the providers or event locations may offer ride sharing deals or promotions.

Go Deeper:

While the holiday travel season is the busiest of the year, mobile provides a powerful tool to allow travelers to make it to their destinations with ease. Whether by land, sea or air, mobile will continue to play an increasing role in the future of the entire travel industry.
