Great Computer Player AI
The app is very good overall, I like the included chess books, but more importantly is has the BEST artificial intelligent computer player of any chess app I’ve ever used!
Lacking in Many Areas
I own many chess programs from Haircs to Shredder to Stockfish to many many engines. That is to say, I have been playing chess on the computer since the early days of ChessMaster. Given the features and options that I expect in a modern chess program, this particular one is lacking. The observations I present here are in no particular order. For one thing, you are unable to select chess pieces or boards or to even rotate the black pieces so they all face the traditional way. It does take some getting used to with the black pieces upside down. While this can be nice for player v player, it is a distraction for player v computer or even computer v computer. Another issue is that there are no specific rankings. You cannot set the ranking of the engine to a specific value but rather are left with the terms Novice, Average, Expert, Grandmaster. I have not run the program against my other chess engines so have no idea the specific difficulty level of each of these categories. One selling point for me was the fact that some chess books are included with the app. Unfortunately the books are quite old - old as in 100 years old. Two of the books, although from the distant past, are by Capablanca and Lasker - definitely chess legends. Likewise, there is no save or pause feature. Either you play or quit. In addition, there is no analysis mode, coaching mode, etc. It is the type of program you may have found in the Microsoft Games package in the 1980s in terms of options. While the chess engine may or may not be first class, the overall program is greatly lacking. Since I grab just about every chess program I find, I do not regret the purchase, but unless you are just curious about it, there are many others I would suggest ahead of this app.
The app is very good overall, I like the included chess books, but more importantly is has the BEST artificial intelligent computer player of any chess app I’ve ever used! Being selectable from novice to grandmaster, it’s great for my son who’s just learning and extremely challenging for someone experienced like me.
