Pretty cool little app…great price!
I needed to create a quick flowchart to show a friend a process, and I found a couple of free utillities online. They weren’t very good. I found Shapes, and it is very easy to use. There are a couple of quirks, like I haven’t found a way to change the page size or orientation (I’d like to make a tabloid-sized chart for my friend), and I’d like to see a “connector” function that automatically joins the “handle” of one shape to another…right now you have to drag the tools from the sidebar, then manually drag the ends of the connector in place. However, once joined, the shapes can be moved and the connectors adjust, unlike trying to do the same thing in Keynote. Also, if you download the trial from the developer and you’ve created a diagram, it won’t let you save. However, you can “Select All” and copy, quit the program, install the new paid version, then paste. It does support multiple pages, though, and I don’t know if this would work if you had more than one page. I’d recommend the app, and look forward to a few minor enhancements…but for now, it works well!
Great app, horrible trial policy
For the pricepoint, this is a fantastic app for throwing together some diagrams. With a little practice, you can compose the building blocks into something that looks really great. I have no complaint about the program itself (so far). However, I find myself infuriated by the developer’s choices when it comes to their free trial. I installed the trial from the website, loved it, and decided to purchase it on the AppStore so that I could install it on all of my macs. However, the free trial doesn’t let you save. And AppStore won’t let me install the paid version while the free version is open. So, having paid for this app, I am now forced to throw away 30 minutes of work just so I can immediately re-create it with my “paid” version of the app. This is a terrible customer experience. Prevent users from exporting, sure. But saving? You have to be kidding me.
Fits the bill
I needed a Visio-lite type of charting tool for the Mac - something for simple diagrams and flowcharts. Because my needs were basic, I didn't want to pay $100 or more for other programs' fancy features or stencils I wouldn't use. Shapes gave me more than I was looking for - well worth the $10. The interface is very clean and intuitive. The software is a pleasure to use. Well done!
Simple, intuitive, awesome!
I needed to create a quick flow chart to visualize a process here at work. I had access to the following site-licensed software (all of which I’ve used in the past): OmniGraffle, Keynote, and Pages. After a few false starts with these apps, I started looking for simpler alternatives. I even Googled to see if anyone had invented a Markdown-like language for flow charts yet (answer: almost; check out Mermaid on github!). In the end, I bought Shapes 4 and was able to figure out the app and churn out the flow chart in about 20 minutes. Best $9.99 I ever spent!
After searching for a Mac-based tool to create sketch drawings and diagrams, I finally found Shapes 4. It’s easy and intuitive to use, with all the features you’d expect in a drawing tool like this and quickly produces quality drawings. All in all, a great tool for the price! Kudos to the developer and I am looking forward to future versions (I just hope that they’ll be backward-compatible with Shapes 4!)
